Position Overview
The Ambulance Director oversees the administrative, operational, and clinical functions of the local ambulance service, ensuring compliance with Iowa law (Iowa Admin. Code ch. 132). Working under guidance from a designated Medical Director, the Director ensures timely call response, regulatory compliance, and continuous quality improvement.
 
Key Responsibilities

1. Emergency Response: Serve as a certified EMT/AEMT or Paramedic and respond to all dispatched ambulance calls during designated work hours.
2. Scheduling & Operations: Develop and manage strategies, including but not limited to on-call scheduling, aimed at improving call response rates.
3. Regulatory Compliance: Maintain all personnel certifications, licensing, documentation, and roster files per Iowa Administrative Code.
4. Equipment & Vehicle Maintenance: Ensure ambulance vehicles and equipment meet state inspection requirements and remain service-ready.
5. Medical Policy & Training: Cooperate with Medical Director to implement, update, and train personnel on protocols and best practices.
6. Billing Oversight: Collect and submit patient care reports and billing information to a contracted third-party billing service in a timely manner.
7. Team Leadership: Recruit, train, organize, supervise, motivate, and recognize volunteer EMS staff and drivers; foster teamwork and professionalism.
8. Quality Assurance: Monitor response metrics and patient care documentation, conduct regular audits, and address deficiencies as identified.
9. Interagency Coordination: Liaise with local hospitals, dispatch centers, and neighboring services to update mutual‑aid agreements and ensure operational alignment.

 
Minimum Qualifications

• Current Iowa EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic certification.
• Valid Iowa driver’s license and credentials to operate emergency vehicles.
• Driving record compliant with City policy
• At least 3–5 years of active EMS experience preferred.
• Leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
• Familiarity with Iowa EMS regulations (Iowa Admin. Code chapters 132 & 641).
• Strong organizational, administrative, record‑keeping, and communication skills.
• Knowledge of EMS billing processes and third-party billing procedures, or a demonstrated ability to learn new concepts expeditiously.

 
Working Conditions
This is a part‑time role with a high degree of flexible scheduling. The Ambulance Director maintains an office at City Hall. The Ambulance Director must be physically capable of emergency response operations and able to drive under varied conditions.
